As you enter the Berry History and Science Room, you are first struck by the fact
that all the pictures usually found in cases with the artifacts are now life-sized
and surround you on the walls. From paintings of dinosaurs found during the Triassic
Period, through men on a hunt for a great mastadon during the Paleolithic Period,
through the Native Americans who first inhabited this area of Texas, up to the
Great Western Cattle Trail's crossing on the Red River known as Doan's Crossing, the
wall paintings and artifacts carry you along. Under the great Golden Eagle, maps
and artist's expectations of early Vernon continue the story. Vernon was home to
several musicians of note, the Streit Family Band, Dr. Paul Goetze, Roy Orbison, and Jack Teagarden, who is still considered to be one of
the finest jazz trombonists who ever lived. Also in this room is an exhibit of the type
of artifacts found in the museum's Educational Outreach Programs, which are provided
free of charge to area schools and organizations.
